Nominations for the 14th annual Urban Music Awards 2016 are announced..
UK, London, (Oct, 19, 2016) – Nominations for the 14th annual Urban Music Awards © were announced today by the UMA Academy and reflected one of the most diverse and exciting years for British and international music talent. UMA past winner and 2005 alumni, Craig David has had an amazing success story. His comeback was felt globally with music fans nominating the singer/songwriter in a record x5 categories- Best Single (for ‘When the Bassline Drops’ ft. Big Narstie), Best Male Act, Best Pop Act, Best R&B Act, Best Album (for ‘Following my Intuition’).
It has been an equally successful year for the Knowles family as the sisters both scored a historical number 1 album in the same year. Beyonce (who released her album ‘Lemonade’ earlier this year) and Solange Knowles (who recently released her debut album ‘A Seat on the Table’) make history as the second siblings since Michael & Janet Jackson to achieve a number 1 album in the same year. They are also the first siblings to be nominated in the same category at the UMA’s. Both go head to head in the Best International Act category.
Solange Knowles, ‘A Seat At The Table’ is also nominated for Best Album alongside Laura Mvula for ‘The Dreaming Room’, Giggs for ‘Landlord’, Kano for ‘Made in the Manor’, Michael Kiwanuka for ‘Love & Hate’, Skepta for ‘Konnichiwa’ and Craig David – for ‘Following My Intuition’
President/Founder of the Urban Music Awards and UMA Academy worldwide, Jordan Kensington commented “The talent especially here in the UK has been incredible this year. When you look at the trend worldwide, urban music has well and truly become the new popular music with hundreds of artists becoming households names, domestically and across other territories and this trend is only set to become much more prominent in the future. We are very proud with the work the UMA Academy has done and continues to do, to open the doors globally for talented artists, producers and songwriters worldwide”.
Since 2003, the UMA’s historically were the first known music awards show to open up the nominations/voting process for music fans to nominate and vote for their favourites in all our categories. This year (2016), the academy received over 892,000 music fans nominating online. The artists/producers/organisations with the highest nominations are automatically shortlisted and the public are given the chance to vote for the winners in all respective categories for the 14th annual Urban Music Awards sponsored by VooVix.
This year’s title sponsor is VooVix. A platform which in cooperates Video, Audio and Photography . It has been described by CNN as “The Lovechild of Youtube, Instagram and Soundcloud” and this year’s UMA’s will be broadcast live on VooVix to millions of viewers on the 26th of November, from 6.30pm GMT.
The UMA’s have always been used as a vehicle to champion great charitable causes partnering with organisations such as, Unicef, WarChild and Save the Children. This year the academy has launched #UMAforCalais which will see much needed funds raised for the Syrian Children facing tough conditions in Calais. During the month of December, the academy will be taking 10 artists over to Calais with food, clothes, and more to perform a mini #UMAforCalais concert for the refugees in Calais. All will be filmed for our documentary #UMAforCalais – The Children of Calais which will be broadcast on VooVix.
