Karlanthony Wilkins, better known by his stage name Vblock Dutch is a Jamaican born Dancehall DJ / Rapper/ Songwriter and Record Producer who migrating to the US with his family in the mid 90’s to South Fla before moving to Brooklyn, NY in the 1999. Dutch released his first studio album “SPARK THIS”, then going by the name DUTCH DIAMOND in 2005 which sold over 25k copies independently. In Jan. 2010 he moved to Virginia and formed Vblock Entertainment, his own Independent Record Label and released several other albums including the last album project, “CONFESSIONS OF A RUDE BOY” which sold over 10k copies (digital downloads) and 5m streams to date. Currently, Dutch is promoting his latest, his 5th studio album entitled “Yaadman Tings” featuring all new tracks out now on all platforms. With singles like ‘Yaadman Ting’ & ‘Son Of A Beat’ doing great numbers to date and both music videos popping on his VEVO account things are looking very promising for this new project which Dutch calls it “my best work to date” sky’s the limit for this consistently deliverable artist/entrepreneur. We decided to catch up with Vblock Dutch to discuss his past, present and future..
What inspired you to get into music?
As a kid I would have constant dreams of songs playing at parties, clubs etc. but I would forget them days later. At 22 I wrote and recorded my first song because over the years the dreams kept coming and so I relented as i got the hint – this was the gift I was given.
How would you describe your music?
Dancehall infused Hip Hop.
What would you say is your recording and song writing style?
“I come in from the rear”, starting with the instrumental that moves me, then i hum the melodies to the chorus, then the verse, then a bridge. Once I lay the pieces down in a rough recording, i’ll start filling in the storyline in the chorus and lastly fill in the verses.
Where would you like to see your music career in 5 years time?
I’d like to be able to carve out a comfortable livelihood and establish myself as an accomplished recording artist.
