Nominations for the 15th annual Urban Music Awards are announced
London , 23/10/17- Nominations for the 15th anniversary of the Urban Music Awards were announced today and the shortlist reflects what has been a truly successful year for British urban music. The UMA’s are scheduled to take place in London on the 30th of November 2017
Dizzee Rascal who last year attended and picked up an award is up for a record x4 nominations for; Best Album, Best Music Video, Best Male Act and Best Single.
The platinum selling recording artist Dizzee Rascal said “The Urban Music Awards recognised and supported my talent right from the beginning before anyone else did and i wouldn’t be where i am today without its continued support”.
Since 2003, the UMA’s historically were the first known music awards show to open up the nominations/voting process for music fans to nominate and vote for their favourites in all our categories. This year (2016), the academy received over 2.6 million music fans nominating online. The artists/producers/organisations with the highest nominations are automatically shortlisted and the public are given the chance to vote for the winners in all respective categories for the 15th annual Urban Music Awards sponsored by VooVix.
US recording HipHop artist Jay -Z added “The Urban Music Awards was the first awards ceremony that said hey you the music fans you tell us what is popular not some academy of judges”. 15 years later other awards ceremonies have followed suit giving the people the voice to both nominate and vote something that was never in existence before the Urban Music Awards. In a recent interview at the UMA office, British HipHop Artist Wretch 32 who won a record 4 awards in 2012 and is also nominated this year said “Most people don’t quite understand how much of an impact the UMA’s had on the scene today. The truth is without the Urban Music Awards, urban music will not be where it is today. At a time where no other organisation supported UK homegrown talent. The UMA’s stood strong in support of the talent who are now household names”.
For 15 years, the Urban Music Awards has not just changed the face of music worldwide as we know it. But, has changed lives, made unknown genres started in pirate stations, council estates, to become worldwide recognisable genres. From Garage to Dubstep, Sublow, to Drum & Bass, Grime, to Bassline, Reggae, to Afrobeat, the UMA’s has been through all the changes and more. important is the future of young talent who need a platform to nurture their talent, learn the craft, study the inside outs of the business, learn about finance and most importantly learn about how to build a sustainable career in music.
For the first time in it’s history, the UMA’s has taken a more international feel with a celebration of urban artists from Asia, South America, USA , Africa and France with the renewed aim to promote a global community of artists collaborating with one another.
